Something I’ve been anxious to get started out on for a while now is level design. Up until about a week ago, most of the level layouts existed only in my mind. This week, I decided to get started on putting them to where they belong, in the game!
I’ve been experimenting with a few techniques but it looks like ultimately, my best bet will be to begin with creating modular level assets, and building the levels piece by piece. I spent a day going the alternative route, i.e., modeling an entire environment as one big mesh and the results were alright but it still seems to be the wrong way of going about it. Making minor tweaks involves going back to blender, making the adjustments, and bringing it back to Unity. Whereas with modular assets, most adjustments should be able to be performed right in Unity. The screen shot from above is from the level modeled as a single mesh.
Another item that I’ve had on the back burner for a while now is shaders. I have some ideas that I don’t think will be too hard to implement that should both look awesome and improve the performance of the game. Hopefully by this time next week I’ll have a working demo. Anywho, that’s all for now, thanks for checking in!
